After watching the film “Witness” by the director Peter Weir, we are quite familiar with some of the Amish way of life. I have some questions for you. Choose the ones you prefer to share your opinion with us . Thanks a lot !!
The Amish are followers of Jacob Amnan who started a new branch from the Protestants in Switzertland. They  moved to America in search of religious freedom and today they still live as ninteenth century communities, without electricity, without technology , of course without TV or music, without expensive goods,such as clothes or jewels. They reject any kind of violence and they they don’t usually pay any kind of insurance due to religious principles.

As teenagers, the young Amish are given the oportunity of going out of their communities and living in the town for some time. However,after that, almost all of them (more than 90%) choose the Amish way of life and join their communities again. Which explanation would you give to that ?

Do you think it is difficult to live in this way, so differnt from our Western lifestyle?

Which of their habits would be the most difficult for you to follow ? No technology? No music? No University ? Manual labour…?Simple clothes ? No alcohol or tobacco ?

According to some researchers by psychologists ,their sense of well-being and happiness is higher than the rest of the American population.The rate of suicide is also half of the rest the USA.  How would you explain it ?

Cancer is much less frequent , whereas genetic disorders like dwarfism(=enanismo) is higher. How would you explain it ?

Which positive things can you find in this lifestyle?

They have a very strong sense of community,as we have seen in the famous barn scene. Which positive and negative things can you see in it ?

Should they be forced to educate their children after their 8th grade ? 

They are against war and any kind of violence . In your opinion, is it possible to live in this was in today’s world ?
