Sands School

Standard

Sand School, in the town of Ashburton, England, is a day school for children aged 10 to 18. It is based on the value of social equality between students and staff, and has few rules. Sands believes that the well-being of a child is more important than academic success. It offers a variety of lessons and activities for students to choose from, and free time for children to follow their own interests. Classes are small and based on the individual needs of each child. The timetable is fixed , but democratically decided, and students are expected to attend.

The weekly school meeting is at the centre of the way Sands is organised . It makes all the decissions that affect the school, including rules, the time table and accepting or rejecting new  students and teachers. Participating in these meeting help the children develop their skills of argument and persuasion. They have the right to decide on changes.

Sands employs no ccoking or cleaning staff; these jobs are done by the students and teachers. Decorating and simple repairs are also done by the students. First, it saves money. Secondly, they learn practical skills . Finally, they learn that there is not a social group or level of people whose job is to serve others.

Thank you very much to those who have already sent a picture for our project :”The extra in the ordinary. The beauty that connects us”. All of them are really fantastic contributions. I have already sent them to our “classmates” in Sweeden, Romania, Greece, Poland and Turkey. If you haven’t sent any picture, you can still do it…

“Into the Wild”

Standard

Whenever this film has  been mentioned in my classes or in conversation with students at the corridors , I have had the impression that those who have seen it feel something very special. They feel that  they belong to a “unique” group and they feel easily connected to others who liked it too. In some way, they seem to share the same dream, the same concept of wisdom , the admiration for the sincerity of the protagonist , the envy for living such an awesome experience, the same desire of personal growth…

I hope you will share a bit of this too… from now on, you belong to the same group…

In unit 4 , entitled “Travellers”, we are going to revise the different verbal tenses for the future. So, my proposal to you is to predict what will happen in this film. We have seen the first 50 minutes and you have quite a lot information about the plot.

Will Chris go back to his home soon ?

Where will he sleep? Will he survive easily ? Will he have difficulties to find food or water? Will he get ill? What kind of illness? How will he get cured?

Who will he meet along his journey? Will he spend most his time alone or with someone? Which qualities will this person have? Which other people will he meet? Other dreamers like him ? Natives in Alaska ? Intellectuals? Ecologists ?

Will he work from time to time ? What kind of jobs will he do? Why ? Will he have problems to be sociable ? Will he be able to enjoy with other people’s company ?

Will he phone his parents at any moment? What will he tell them about his new life? Will he send a letter ? Will his sister Carine meet him at any moment ? Where ? Why ?

Will he go back to live a normal life? When ? Where ? Do you think he will have a family and will be happy? Which kind of job will he get ? Remember he had graduated in Harvard.

Please, leave your comments…and one day, if we had enough money , would you like to visit the Magic Bus ? Would be great, don’t you think so ?
