It’s a great article !!!

“We all know Lance Armstrong. When I was young, I always heard my father saying: “This man is a monster. He beats all.”And I always thought he was Superman or something similar. To me, he was like a star, I wanted to be like him, to win all races and be the number one.

Lance had won seven tours, the most important cycling race, and he was considered the most important cycle racer in history. When he was ill with cancer, he was an example of overcoming. He created an international foundation to help people with the same disease. Everybody loved Lance Armstrong. He was the perfect man and everybody should be like him.

All of it until last June, when all which had believed in was simply false. Read the rest of this entry

Albany Free School

Standard

Albany Free School is based on freedom and democratic priciples, with students and staff taking decisions together at a weekly meeting. But unlike many similar schools, this one is also open to children of the poor. It has children aged 2 to 14, and nobody is rejected for financial reasons. It is located in a racially and socio-economically mixed neighbourhood of Central New York.

In some ways, Albany Free School is like a normal school with books, computers and other equipment. Some rooms even have blackboards or desks. In other ways it is very different. It does not have a curriculum or any compulsory classes. Classroom sessions are informal and last only as long as children remain interested. Learning happens best when children want to learn. There are no tests either.

There is no typical day at the school. Every day develops according to spontaneous ideas or outing to world events. The school runs a small farm on the block , where students learn the basics of working with animals and growing flowers , herbs and vegetables. Older students take part in a wide training programme, working with actors, magicians, chefs, carpenters, midwives (=matronas), lawyers, vets, archaeologists, computer programmers and even pilots.
